The construction of the Napier-Railton commenced in 1932. John Cobb the cars owner spent many hours at the Thompson and Taylor factory at Brooklands where the car was built. Using a 24 litre Napier Lion aero engine gave enormous power at relatively few revs. In mid 1933 the car won its maiden race despite a heavy time handicap. The ultimate Brooklands lap record was captured in October 1935 at 143.44mph. The track was damp and the stress on the tyres gave them a life of only 2 laps. The feat of capturing the record stands as a monument to the courage and skill of John Cobb "Honest John" to his friends.
