The Riley 9 caused considerable interest when first displayed at the 1926 Motor Show at Olympia. Although not in its Brooklands racing form but as a 9 Saloon the interest centered around the new overhead valve engine created by Stanley and Percy Riley. The car modelled was driven in its stripped form by A.F. Ashby and was capable of 100 m.p.h running on Benzole fuel. It is said that Parry Thomas was involved in the tuning of the engine but it is not known if Riley commissioned him or he felt the Riley engine had great potential for use in a new "Flat Iron" project. However his untimely death prevented any further progress.
